What you need to know

Details people often redact

  • National Insurance number on payslips (or PPS number in Ireland).
  • Sort code and full account number on bank statements.
  • Date of birth and home address when they aren't needed.
  • Individual transactions that are nobody else's business.

Why a black box isn't enough

Many editors only draw a rectangle on top of the text, which can still be selected and copied. Here the page is saved as an image with the black areas, so the data is gone from the PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Answers before you start

Should I redact everything on a payslip?

No. Leave what the recipient actually needs, such as your name, employer and pay. Ask if you're unsure.

How do I check the redaction worked?

Open the result and try to select the text in the black area, or search for the number. You shouldn't find anything.
