The steps, in short

  1. Add the PDFFrom Downloads, the Files app or a saved email attachment.
  2. Sign in the boxWith your finger or a stylus. If you don't like it, tap Clear signature and try again.
  3. Tap the pagePlace the signature in the right spot; tap it to remove it if you got the place wrong.
  4. Save and sendDownload the PDF and send it by email or messaging app, as a document.

For a neat signature

  • Turn the phone sideways: the box gets wider.
  • Sign larger than on paper; the tool shrinks the signature to the size you choose.
  • Choose the Small size if the signature space on the form is narrow.

Built-in alternatives

On iPhone, the Files app and Mail have the Markup tool for drawing on a PDF. On Android, some PDF apps have similar features. The tool here works the same on every phone and places the signature precisely on the right page.

What the signature means legally

An added signature is a simple electronic signature. It's enough for most everyday documents; a few, such as deeds, have their own rules on signing and witnessing.
