How to scan documents with an iPhone

In short

Open the Notes app, create a note, tap the camera and choose Scan Documents. Hold the iPhone over the page: it's cropped and straightened automatically. You can scan several pages in a row, and the result is a PDF.

The steps, in short

  1. Open the scannerIn Notes: new note → camera → Scan Documents. Or in the Files app: three-dot menu → Scan Documents.
  2. Scan the pagesPlace the document on a dark surface in good light. The scan is taken automatically when the page is steady.
  3. Check the croppingTap a page to adjust it, rotate it or make it black and white.
  4. SaveTap Save. In Files, the PDF is saved directly; in Notes, tap the scan → Share → Save to Files.

Several documents in one PDF

If you scanned the documents separately, combine them with Merge PDF in the required order. If you'd rather not use Notes, the scanner above does the same in the browser: it finds the edges, straightens the page and gives you a PDF.

For a good scan

  • Even light, without the phone's shadow on the page.
  • A dark background so the iPhone can find the edges.
  • For text-only documents, choose the black and white filter: the file is smaller and clearer.
