What is a HEIC file and how do you open it?
In short
HEIC is the default format for iPhone photos: good quality and small files, but poorly supported by websites and Windows. The easiest fix is to choose the photos in Safari in the tool below; it receives them as JPG and puts them into a PDF.
Do it right here
Why portals reject HEIC
Upload forms usually accept only JPG, PNG and PDF. HEIC is a newer format that many programs and browsers on Windows and Android can't read. The portal sees an unknown extension and rejects the file.
Three solutions
- From Safari: when you choose photos from your library on a website, the iPhone usually converts them to JPG automatically. The tool here receives them correctly.
- Camera setting: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG.
- Sent by messaging app: apps like WhatsApp send photos compressed as JPG.
If you already have .heic files on your computer
Add them to the tool above or to HEIC to JPG: they're decoded in the browser, with no extension. Alternatively, Windows can open them with extensions from the Microsoft Store, and on a Mac the Preview app exports them directly to JPG or PDF.
